Helenium, Eschscholzia, Salvia, Astrantia and others
A woodland-style bed by the fence next to the pond, built around an old log pile (good for beetles, frogs and hedgehogs). Contents so far:
• Helenium (sneezeweed): yellow and orange daisies with domed brown centres
• California poppies: feathery blue-green mounds, yellow-orange flowers
• Coral salvia: red flowers
• Astrantia (masterwort): pincushion flowers
• Fern: likely a lady fern (tbc)
• Small white-flowered plant by the logs: possibly a saxifrage (tbc)
• Meadow rue or similar: columbine-like leaves near the pots
• Young climber on a cane (tbc)
• Currant bush at the far end, buddleja overhead
• Two potted Pseudopanax (see their entry)
Winter: mulch the salvia well or take cuttings, as it's borderline hardy. Leave helenium and astrantia seed heads for the birds.
Still colourful at the end of September: helenium and California poppies in flower, red salvia going strong, astrantia going over, and the fern looking lush. A lot of these plants are Kirsty's; details to be filled in.
Half the fun was planting flowerbeds and gardens around the rides.
