Rosa 'Geoff Hamilton' (English shrub rose)
A 'Geoff Hamilton' rose, bought as a shoot or two in a standard rose pot from the nursery at Barnsdale Gardens in Rutland. Paid full price, a rare event round here.
Barnsdale was Geoff Hamilton's own garden and the home of Gardeners' World while he presented it. It's still open: 38 themed gardens, run organically and peat-free by his son Nick, with a nursery attached. Worth the trip, and a rose named after the man himself seemed only right.
A few yellowing and spotty leaves at this time of year are normal. Pick off any with black spot and bin them (not the compost heap). Prune in late winter or early spring.
Planted out in summer 2026.
A flowering shrub for a mixed border or a sufficiently large container. Its established shrub form is the main option.
In the Second World War, British schoolchildren gathered wild rose hips to be made into vitamin C syrup.

The whole story hangs on one very particular rose.
