Acer pseudoplatanus
Self-seeded from the parent sycamore next door, and grew into a young tree several metres tall with a single main trunk. Sycamores reach 20–30 m, which was never going to work against the fence. His siblings still turn up as seedlings every spring.
Felled. A stump of roughly knee height is left by the fence, cut in stages with a sliver of trunk still standing, and the trunk sections are lying alongside. Sycamore stumps resprout strongly, so watch for new shoots in spring.
Healthy, dense canopy and already heavy with its own seed keys. Trunk and lower side stems are very close to the fence panel; watch for pressure and rubbing as it thickens.
Decision made to take him down: roots found heading towards the concrete path behind the fence. Cuttings taken as an experiment (see Sycamore cuttings).
Grandmother Willow, the wisest tree on the Mega Drive.
