Sempervivum (varieties unconfirmed)
A crowded pot of houseleek rosettes in a mix of green and red, topped with slate chippings. Probably more than one variety.
The offsets (the 'chicks') can be pulled off and potted up to make new plants. A rosette dies after it flowers, but the chicks carry on. Needs sun and gritty, free-draining compost.
A mixed rosette display for a shallow container, rock or gravel planting, using the foliage colours as the main contrast.
Legend has it Charlemagne ordered houseleeks planted on roofs to ward off lightning.
Healthy, tightly packed pot of rosettes in greens and deep reds, with lots of offsets. A few dried-up old leaves between the rosettes.
Houseleeks are Sempervivum, which means 'live forever'.
