Hosta 'Fire and Ice'
Narrow, slightly twisted leaves with a creamy-white centre and green margins, and a tall stem of lilac bell flowers. Variety 'Fire and Ice': bright white centres with dark green edges. Bought bare-root in May.
Hostas die right back to the ground in winter and pop up again in spring, so don't panic when it vanishes. Slugs and snails love the new spring shoots.
Variegated foliage for a shaded border or container, contrasting with fine-leaved plants.
In Japan, young hosta shoots are a spring mountain vegetable called 'urui'.
Healthy, with creamy-white centred leaves edged in green and a tall stem of lilac flowers. A couple of older leaves browning off at the base, which is normal as it heads towards dormancy.
From IceCap Zone to fiery Angel Island: fire and ice, just like this hosta.
