The pile, with a few hedgehogs somewhere inside, 28 Sept 2026
The brash pile
Habitat: brash pile
A big, loose pile of brash, prunings and old stems in the far corner, topped up each winter with the buddleja's hacked-back branches.
It's home to a few hedgehogs, plus countless beetles, woodlice and other small creatures. Hedgehogs will be settling in to hibernate from around now until spring, so it's best left undisturbed, and never burnt.
