Fragaria × ananassa (a runnerless variety; name tbc)
Supermarket rescues from spring 2026, bought in bargain-bin condition. They cropped well this year all the same.
The variety doesn't send out runners, which makes them tidy edging: planted out in October 2026 along both sides of the veg bed, between the chives on one side and beside the jostaberry on the other.
Permanent edible edging for the veg bed, cropping for three or four years before the plants tire.
Botanically, a strawberry isn't a berry: the red part is the swollen flower base, and the 'seeds' on the outside are the actual fruits.
Six plants set out along the outside edges of the veg bed in our own garden mix: three between the chives on one side, three with the jostaberry on the other. Some tatty autumn leaves, plenty of fresh ones, and one still trying a late flower.
The strawberry is the second fruit to wander into the maze. 200 points, if you catch it.
