Salvia, Thymus and Origanum
A mixed herb bowl with three herbs:
• Purple sage (Salvia officinalis 'Purpurascens')
• Thyme (Thymus, a low creeping type with pink flowers)
• Oregano (Origanum vulgare), the trailing one
All three are Mediterranean herbs that like sun and hate sitting wet over winter, so raise the bowl on pot feet. Give the sage and thyme a light trim in spring rather than a hard cut back into old wood.
A compact kitchen-herb display. The individual herbs could also form separate containers or suitable border planting.
Oregano's name comes from the Greek for 'joy of the mountain', and sage's Latin name, Salvia, comes from salvere: 'to be healthy'.
Healthy and full. The sage has soft grey-green leaves with purple new growth, the thyme is spilling over the rim with a few small pink flowers, and the oregano is trailing down the front. A few dead sage leaves to pick off.
The go-to healing item is the Medical Herb.
