In the shallows, with two likely water boatmen, Summer 2026
Mosquito larvae
Culicidae (likely; species tbc)
A loose shoal of wrigglers in the pond shallows, most likely mosquito larvae: bristly at one end, breathing through the other. The two stouter, stripier characters in the middle look like lesser water boatmen passing through.

Did you know?
Mosquito larvae breathe through a snorkel at the tail end, hanging head-down from the surface film. Only the adult females bite; the males live on nectar.
