Pica pica
One of a mischief of magpies who live nearby. They squawk loudly at each other whenever we step outside, and are too shy for close contact: unlike the pigeons, they are nobody's fool.
Once we're safely out of sight, and still spying on them, they play about on the garden and inspect whatever we've changed, particularly if the change has left food behind.
Photographed working along the neighbours' fence, past their pansies.
Magpies are among the few animals that recognise themselves in a mirror.
Added to the catalogue. Photo from summer 2026.
A game about taking eggs. It would be good at it.
