Rosa (variety unknown)
Belongs to our lovely neighbours and grows through our fence; we prune it for them. A family rose, three generations old: our neighbour had it from her mum, who had it from hers, so it could be a very old variety.
Large, full flowers, pale in the centre and edged in bright pink. The variety isn't known; it looks like a climber or a tall hybrid tea.
If you'd ever like one of your own, a hardwood cutting in autumn (with the neighbours' blessing) is the classic way to keep a family rose going.
A flowering garden feature; any alternative training or container use depends on identifying its type and growth habit.
Still flowering at the end of September: large, full blooms with a pale centre flushing to deep pink at the petal edges, growing through the fence. Red-bronze new growth at the tips and a few spotted older leaves, which is normal for a rose this late in the season.
The whole story hangs on one enchanted rose.
