An order arrived: a raspberry that claims to be a tree, a hydrangea nine centimetres across and already in its autumn colours, and a mock orange that turned up without a label. He is Phil now.
Meanwhile it is October, and the flowers have not been told. The calendula is out in doubles and singles, one of them growing a spare flower out of its own middle. The cornflowers are running through white, lilac, blue and magenta, the marigolds are a solid orange, and the garlic chives have flowered and moved on to seed without asking.
Photographed in a slight wind, on a phone with a terrible zoom. Better ones to follow.
